What To Do If Your Motorhome Breaks Down

Owning a motorhome is a wonderful way to explore the UK and Europe, enjoy freedom, and embrace the open road. But like all vehicles, even well-maintained motorhomes can suffer breakdowns. Whether it’s on a remote lane, a busy motorway, or in the middle of nowhere, knowing what to do can make a huge difference. Here’s a practical guide from West Country Motorhomes to help you manage the situation safely, efficiently, and with as little disruption as possible.

 

1. Stay Calm & Prioritise Safety

  • Pull over safely: As soon as you notice something wrong including strange noises, warning lights, loss of power, it’s important to find a safe place to stop. Try for the hard shoulder (if on a motorway), a lay-by, or any wide verge.
  • Turn on hazard lights: Let other drivers know there’s a problem.
  • Use reflective gear: If you need to exit the vehicle, wear high-visibility clothing. Place warning triangles behind the vehicle if safe to do so (at the correct distance).

 

2. Diagnose the Problem

  • Check basic systems: Tyres, lights, battery connections, engine oil, fuel level, coolant. Sometimes issues are simple and fixable by yourself.
  • Read warning lights/messages: Modern motorhomes often have built-in diagnostics. If a particular warning light or message appears, refer to the driver’s handbook.
  • Listen & observe: Odd smells (burning, fuel, oil), smoke, leaks, or other unusual signs can help narrow down the fault.

  • Know your breakdown cover: Many motorhomes are covered by organisations like the AA, RAC, Green Flag or specialty motorhome breakdown services. Keep policy details, contact numbers, membership card handy.
  • If you have warranty / service plan with WCMH or the manufacturer, check whether the breakdown might be covered.
  • Provide the dispatcher with:
    • Your location (use GPS / road signs / nearest postcode)
    • Details of the issue (what you’ve observed, warning lights, smells etc.)
    • Vehicle registration, make & model
  • Ask how long the rescue is likely to take and whether it’s safe to stay inside or should you wait elsewhere.

 

5. What to Do While Waiting

  • Stay visible & safe: Stay inside or near the motorhome if it’s safe. Avoid standing between your motorhome and traffic.
  • Use your phone: Call friends or family if needed, inform them of your delay. If you have mobile coverage, maybe research local garage options as backup.
  • Conserve resources: Turn off non-essential electrical systems, especially if battery is at risk.

 

6. Getting the Motorhome Repaired

  • When the recovery service arrives, ask whether the vehicle will be fixed on the spot or transported.
